The Good, The Bad and The Difference

Lately, the subpar performance of the 2024 Olympic Champions in VNL 2026—a team that won gold by decisively winning its matches—made me think about the performance of individual players and the team as a whole. I initially deduced that the difference came down to individual ambition to win. Personal motivation boosts individual performance like a turbo, but we need to look at this from a broader perspective.

The desire to succeed keeps a player locked into the game. It allows them to control their muscles more effectively and sharpens their reflexes. However, there is a limit to this. Some can maintain that motivation until the end, but others cannot. This brought me to the work done before the match even starts. A truly successful player is motivated from childhood until retirement. This continuous ambition helps the player strengthen their muscles, sharpen their reflexes, and master the control of their limbs. The result: high endurance during the match, agility, and precise execution.

A standard player mostly trains during official training sessions. For the best players, the team session is just the baseline. They keep training on their own until they perfect their body—they compete with themselves. Passion keeps them motivated to do this, meaning their drive starts long before game day. On the other hand, players born with superior natural talent sometimes lack this continuous drive, which leads to sharp ups and downs throughout their careers.

Self-motivation works differently in team sports compared to individual sports. Sustaining motivation in individual sports like tennis or snooker is far more difficult. I have observed that top players in these sports keep their motivation by treating every single game or frame as an isolated, standalone match. They focus entirely on winning the immediate point in front of them. This mental decoupling is how miracles happen—it is how the GOATs can face an opponent's match point, reset completely, and reverse the entire outcome.

In team sports, motivation relies on a different dynamic. A player is influenced by their teammates' energy, making it somewhat easier to sustain. The best teams achieve success largely because of this. When multiple players possess deep self-motivation before the match and continuously refine themselves, it creates a self-sustaining synergy. This is one of the main reasons the Dream Team succeeded—the individual players already possessed an insane ambition to win.

Conversely, we often see top teams lose to weaker opponents due to a drop in concentration. This comes down to the endurance level of each player's motivation. Team sports have a contagious vulnerability: if a few players lose concentration, it spreads to the rest of the team. The opposite, of course, is also true.

Furthermore, the GOAT players in team sports possess a macro-vision—they see the flow of the entire match. Coaches often give these exceptional players complete tactical freedom, allowing them to make real-time decisions without rigid system constraints. It reminds me of Toshiro Mifune’s performance in Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. Kurosawa later stated that while he strictly controlled every move of the other actors, he let Mifune act freely. The ultimate player operates under that same trust.

Finally, we cannot forget that the ambition to win is rooted in success itself. If a team keeps losing because they lack quality, maintaining a winning mindset becomes much harder. It functions as a positive feedback loop: winning fuels ambition, while continuous losing erodes both confidence and execution.

Why Team Sport Head Coaches Deserve Olympic Medals

The modern Olympic Games have expanded far beyond their ancient origins, evolving from pure individual athletic contests into complex team competitions. Yet, Olympic medal protocols remain anchored in a framework that fails to distinguish between individual execution and team system dynamics. In individual disciplines—such as sprinting, swimming, or weightlifting—the direct correlation between individual physical output and competition results justifies the athlete receiving sole podium recognition. In these events, the coach acts primarily as an offline developer whose primary work is finished before the event begins. Once the clock starts, execution rests entirely with the individual.

Team sports, however, operate on a fundamentally different structural logic. A team sport is an active control loop where the head coach functions as the real-time operational lead. The coach determines roster selection, establishes baseline tactical schemes, and executes critical in-game decisions—from live personnel match-ups and formation shifts to strategic time-outs and substitution timing. These choices act as dynamic control inputs that directly alter the outcome of the game. In a highly tactical team discipline, victory relies as much on real-time coaching decisions as it does on the physical execution of the players.

Despite this central role, current International Olympic Committee regulations limit medal distribution exclusively to participating athletes. This policy creates a stark operational asymmetry. The head coach bears ultimate responsibility for the team’s tactical performance, yet receives no official medal hardware when that system succeeds. Meanwhile, professional sports organizations across football, basketball, and other leagues have long recognized that championship outcomes are co-authored by coaching staff, awarding official championship hardware to head coaches alongside their players.

Restructuring Olympic Charter protocols to include head coaches on team sport podiums would align official recognition with operational reality. By granting official Olympic medals to the technical directors who manage these tactical systems, the IOC would correct a longstanding administrative oversight and properly honor the complete structure of modern team performance.

The Sovereign Threat: How Autocratic Wealth and Western Greed Corrupt Global Sports

The scheduling anomalies of modern sports tournaments—such as the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) format where top global powerhouses are structurally prevented from facing one another in the preliminary rounds—are often dismissed as mere bureaucratic clunkiness. They are not. These bizarre, commercially bloated tournament structures are the visible symptoms of a much deeper, systemic rot. International sports are no longer about athletic merit; they have been transformed into a borderless marketplace where sovereign integrity is sold to the highest bidder, and where democratic nations are being systematically priced out by authoritarian regimes.

The Economics of Exclusion: Why Host Fees Breed Corruption

Hosting a major international sporting event has become a financial suicide pact for democratic nations. Today, organizing a World Cup or an Olympic Games requires billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded infrastructure, much of which results in abandoned "white elephant" stadiums that serve no long-term public good. Because democratic governments are accountable to taxpayers and subject to public referendums, citizens are increasingly voting "NO" to hosting these tournaments.

This mass exit of democracies has created a massive financial vacuum. Enter autocratic regimes and Gulf states. For these dictatorships, money is no object. They willingly absorb staggering financial losses because they are buying something far more valuable than ticket revenue: international legitimacy. Through "sportswashing," authoritarian regimes use the glamor of global sports to mask human rights abuses, rewrite their international image, and project soft power on the world stage. By allowing host fees to skyrocket, international sports bodies have effectively engineered a system where only dictators can afford to play.

The Western Hypocrisy: Elite Gatekeepers in Switzerland

The ultimate irony of this system lies in its gatekeepers. The executives who run the world’s most powerful sports federations—including FIFA, UEFA, the FIVB, and the IOC—are almost exclusively citizens of Western democracies. They enjoy the safety, freedom, and rule of law provided by their home countries, yet they run their organizations like unregulated, feudal fiefdoms.

These federations hide behind Swiss "non-profit" legal status, a historical loophole that grants them massive tax exemptions and shields them from aggressive financial oversight. Operating beyond the reach of standard corporate governance, these elite gatekeepers accept billions from authoritarian regimes. This money is then funneled into domestic development funds and executive perks, functioning as a legal slush fund to secure their own perpetual re-election. They publicly preach corporate social responsibility and inclusivity while privately cashing the checks of regimes that stand opposed to those very values.

The Swiss Vacuum: A Sanctuary for Global Dark Money

The global community routinely penalizes, sanctions, or isolates nations that sponsor international instability or harbor illicit networks. Yet, a glaring double standard exists in the heart of Europe. Switzerland walks the world stage as a symbol of elegance, wealth, and peaceful neutrality. In reality, its prosperity has historically been subsidized by a "vacuum effect" that attracts and legitimizes the world’s black money.

As Western democracies pass stricter laws to ban corporate bribery, enforce financial transparency, and freeze illicit assets, they inadvertently supercharge this Swiss vacuum. Because Switzerland permits and protects financial structures that are banned elsewhere in the West, it becomes the default sanctuary for corrupt entities. International sports federations are not in Switzerland by coincidence. They are there because the state provides the perfect legal architecture to sanitize their operations. By allowing these bodies to operate with total impunity, Switzerland acts as a structural enabler of global institutional corruption.

The National Security Threat: Corruption as a Weapon

This is no longer just a crisis of sports ethics; it is a direct threat to national security and state sovereignty. The corrupt money washing through international sports does not stay contained within the stadiums. It bleeds into democratic societies, buying up local marketing firms, influencing real estate markets, and gaining back-room access to Western political figures.

More dangerously, sports federations now wield enough monopolistic power to hold sovereign governments hostage. Under current international sports bylaws, if a democratic nation's local police or judiciary attempts to investigate corruption within a national sports body, the global federation threatens a total ban. They will disqualify the country's national teams and athletes from international competition. Faced with public outrage from sports fans, democratic governments routinely back down, effectively allowing foreign-backed sports cartels to dictate terms to sovereign states and override local laws.

The Innovative Solution: Dismantling the Sanctuary

For decades, the standard response to sports corruption has been the call for boycotts. But boycotts are a failed strategy. Staying home achieves nothing; it simply surrenders the global stage to dictators and deprives clean athletes of their careers. The solution requires an innovative, aggressive clean-out that targets the financial infrastructure of these corrupt bodies and breaks the Swiss vacuum:

1. Evicting the Federations: Western alliances (such as the EU or G7) must issue an ultimatum: sports governing bodies must relocate their headquarters out of Switzerland and into jurisdictions with strict, transparent corporate oversight. If a federation refuses to move, its tournaments should be banned from being broadcasted, sponsored, or hosted within democratic nations.

2. Closing the Vacuum: Western democracies must align their diplomatic and trade pressures to force Switzerland to eliminate the specific legal loopholes, tax exemptions, and secrecy laws that attract these corrupt entities. If Switzerland wishes to enjoy the benefits of the Western economic grid, it can no longer serve as the premier sanctuary for the world's dirty capital.

3. Financial Vaporization: Western governments should deploy targeted asset freezes, visa bans, and anti-money laundering sanctions to financially neutralize corrupt sports executives overnight. State-sponsored sports bribery must be treated as a hostile act of foreign political interference.

The global sports apparatus cannot be reformed from the inside. The incentives for corruption are too deeply entrenched. Only by treating sports corruption as a matter of national sovereignty and executing a rapid, financial eradication can we rescue global sports from the grip of autocratic wealth and restore the true spirit of international competition.

Sports Town

The idea of a sports town came to my mind during Paris Olympics. Key to success for an athlete lied on disciplined continuous planned training. These training should have begun early on the athletes life. Living in a big city, going to school and going to trainings would be difficult for a child. I thought of the sports town like a big boarding school. Young athletes would live in central accommodations and going to school and training would not be difficult for them. This proximity allows for a significantly higher density of training sessions and recovery cycles within the same 24-hour period.

In terms of daily life, this specialized environment does two things. First, it offers a safe, focused space that helps young people stay away from bad habits during their teenage years. Second, it provides a high-performance competition environment. Living around other top young athletes naturally creates a sense of healthy competition and a drive to be the best, all while learning the values of sportsmanship.

The financial sustainability of the Sports Town utilizes a localized investment model. Recognizing that elite training is capital-intensive, the system employs a sponsorship framework managed by specialized financial institutions. These sponsorships operate similarly to equity; investors can purchase and trade athlete stocks. When a sponsored athlete signs a professional contract or moves to a major club, the investors receive a share of the transfer fee or signing bonus. This provides a scalable, market-driven alternative to traditional youth academy funding.

Logistically, the town functions as a high-throughput competition hub. The density of sports centers allows for tournaments to be executed at an accelerated pace, as athletes and officials are not required to navigate long-distance travel between venues. This infrastructure also makes the town a primary destination for professional clubs seeking optimized camping or off-season training environments.

The ecosystem is rounded out by specialized support services, including:

Sports-Specific Healthcare: Medical facilities optimized for rapid biomechanical recovery and injury prevention.

Technical Human Capital: Dedicated accreditation programs for trainers, coaches, and sports scientists to ensure the latest methodologies are integrated into the training loops.

In summary, the Sports Town is a solution for human performance. By concentrating infrastructure, talent, and capital into a single high-density ecosystem, we remove the logistical and financial barriers that typically slow down an athlete’s development. This model transforms sports training from a fragmented activity into a vertically integrated industry. It not only produces elite athletes more efficiently but also creates a self-sustaining financial cycle that benefits investors, trainers, and the broader sports community.

National Cup Tournament

This idea is not new. While I am taking a break from high-tech topics, I wanted to document this proposition for a new National Cup format in football.

My proposal is to eliminate matches played during the regular season and transform the National Cup into a concentrated end-of-year tournament. By reallocating the schedule currently used for cup ties, the league phase would conclude much earlier, clearing the path for a 16-team finalist tournament.

Qualification Structure

At the end of the season, the top 12 teams from the first league would qualify automatically. The remaining spots would be filled through a preliminary tournament involving the lower-ranked first-league teams and top-ranking teams from the other leagues. The top four from this phase would join the 16-team finals. This timeline allows successful first-league teams to complete their international commitments before the cup begins.

Tournament Logistics

The National Cup would be hosted across five selected cities. The group stage would take place in four cities, each housing four teams. Each team plays every other team in its group once.

Quarter-Finals: The top team from each group remains in their host city, while the second-placed teams travel to face them.

Final Four: The semi-finals and the final would be held in a fifth designated city.

Ideally, the preliminary tournament would also rotate through different regional cities to maximize local engagement.

Strategic Advantages

Tournaments inherently generate more intensity and attention than matches distributed across a long season. By moving the National Cup to the end of the calendar, the format rewards teams that reach their performance peak at the most critical time. This structure turns the cup into a high-stakes finale rather than a mid-season distraction.

Snooker League

I like watching snooker, but seeing so many problems in the organization made me think of new ideas. Organizing open tournaments with so many players is not something I support. This is a problem of Tennis as well. I am in favor of grouping players into leagues. I propose three leagues for Snooker. The top 32 players in the 2 years list will play in a Premier League, like in Football, for a year. The next 64 will play in League 1 and the remaining will play in the Amateur League.

Premier League will have tournaments with high frame count. The players will earn points according to the frames they win. As a result, a player loosing at the decider will get much more points than the one white washed. The games won on quarter finals and beyond will award extra points. All games will be played out of 15 red balls. There will be no Shoot-Out. Each frame won will award 15 points to the player. The tournament price money will be independently determined from the points. Every tournament will award points unlike the current Masters.

League 1 will have tournaments with lower frame count. The players will earn points according to the frames they win. In addition to the classical snooker, there will be 6-10 red ball tournaments as well as multiple Shoot-Outs. Frames won on 6-10 red ball and Shoot-Out will award 10 points. Amateur League will also have similar tournaments.

The objective is to make all leagues attractive to the audience and award the players fairly.

Footprint of Tournaments

Today I was watching Snooker Xi'an Grand Prix and the commentor mentioned that the player had to pay a large amount of money to alter his flight date because he had wined his previous game and progressed on the tournament. Snooker is an individual sports where the income is based on one's success on the tournaments. Most of these tournaments are organized in England and China. These two countries have quite distance between them. As a result, any flight from one country to the other costs really high. Most players don't earn that much money to compensate these travel cost. My proposition for World Snooker Tour is to form a tournament calendar to minimize the travel costs. At the moment, an Asian tournament is followed by a British one. At some extremes, like the one this week, a tournament at the heart of China is followed by Northern Ireland. Which requires at least three connecting flights to reach from one destination to the other.

My recommendation is to organize all Chinese tournaments one after the other followed by the ones at Thailand and then the ones at Arabic peninsula then England and its surroundings. As a result, a player can travel from one destination to the other with a single flight and at a lower cost. Funny thing at the moment, depending on the tournament stage, an unexpected win for a player would cost money because a flight change and extra stay at the hotel surpasses the amount earned.

My proposition is valid for other sports events as well. Unfortunately, latest sports events require more and more travelling. This contradicts with the latest global warming movement especially in Europe. All these sports federations are filled with European executives and they make such decisions.

Metric Snooker

For the past few years, I am following the snooker tournaments. The tournament only nature of the competition and the limitations of income for many players made me think of ways to improve the British snooker.

My initial change came as the dimensional change to the snooker table and the balls to make them metric. Metric snooker will be played in leagues. Each league will have 16 players. The games will begin on January and end on December. There will be four seasons within the year. Each season will start with a league phase. Where each player will play against the rest of the players once. The game will be played for 3 frames. Each frame will have monetary and point value for the player. Within two weeks, each player will play 15 matches. This phase will allow each player to earn at least some money and the points earned will be used to determine the rankings. The next two weeks will be a tournament time. Each player’s opponent will be determined by the rankings from the previous two weeks. During the tournament every frame won will have a monetary value. The winner of each phase will get extra bonus. The objective is to encourage players to fight till the end. Because with classical snooker, looser on decider or white washed gets the same money which is not fair. After the tournament, there will be another two weeks of league play. The points earned during these two weeks will affect the ranking of the next tournament.  These small tournaments rankings will be reset after the tournament. However, there will be a seasonal ranking which will keep accumulating. After two months, the players would have played two league phases and two tournaments. During the third month the players will play a major tournament. Each player’s opponent will be determined by the total rankings from the previous two months. This tournament will be played over higher frame count and have higher monetary award. At the end of this major tournament, season champion will be determined. This three-month cycle will repeat four more times to complete the year. At the end of the year the overall champion will be awarded. Additionally, the last four at the rankings will be sent to the sub league and the top four players from the sub league will be a part of the upper league for the next season.

The metric snooker will be played over a robotic table. The balls will be placed using auto grabber (The grabber will hide inside the side panels when not in use.). Each ball's position will be known by the robotic table. Therefore, at any time the balls would be perfectly repositioned by the robot. There will be no referee on the table but a VAR system will be used. Every shot of the game will be saved with the exact location of each ball. This know how will be used during the training of the player. For example, during training, the player will ask the table to reposition the balls to a position where the player missed during the game so that he or she can retry the exact shot. It's metric snooker version of the chess notation system to record the moves of the pieces. More importantly this technology will allow the players to practice alone and improve their weaknesses. The objective is to minimize the gap between the players to have a more challenging competition.

The games will be played in a small venue where each sit will have a table on its front. So that the audience can eat and drink during the event. It will be like a bar with a dome and two snooker tables in the middle. The snooker tables will be surrounded by protective glass and sound deadeners, to allow the audience to entertain freely without disturbing the players. The player section will be air conditioned to maintain a certain humidity which affects potting. Continuous matches throughout the year will keep the venue busy all year long.

The top two floors of the venue will have flats for 16 players. This will allow the players to sleep or relax between intense weekly schedules. Additionally, it will guarantee an accommodation for the foreign players.

Greatest Sportsmen

This morning, several hours before I woke-up, I saw Novak Đoković in my dream. He was staying in our house in Adana with his family. I talked with him. I said I am sorry to see him lost the day before, but happy to see him in my house because he had lost. If he had won, he would have been preparing for the match. And he replied, "No Problem". I said, I was planning to write about him in the morning. And he replied, "This Is Important". Now I am writing the article I had thought about several days ago.

I mainly watch volleyball, basketball, football, tennis and the Olympics in terms of sports. Among all these sports, tennis differentiates itself from the others. The tennis players are several leagues ahead of the others because they are alone in the court. They have no one assisting, supporting or substituting them. Either they play or walkover. Additionally, for me what differentiates human from the other animals is their thinking ability. Therefore, physical ability only athleticism is not that valuable for me. Running 100 meters in one second or jumping a thousand meters above ground don’t mean much to me. Deciding where to run, where to position, how to move your body and arm, add much more value to simple athleticism. In order to win in tennis, you have to be athletic and make the right decisions in milli seconds continuously for hours all by yourself. Tennis players are physically and mentally the strongest sportsmen.

I have been watching Đoković for the last 4 years. Even though I was a Nadal fan. Novak is really superior. More importantly he had distributed his success over the years. Every age brings something new and takes back more. Only a few sportsmen can adapt themselves to their age. Additionally, he can speak so many languages that I cannot list here. That is why Novak is the Greatest Of All Time.

As a result, in my point of view Novak Đoković, Новак Ђоковић, is the greatest sportsmen in history!

Red, Green, Blue Tennis Tournament

I had thought about a city fully dedicated to sports. It would have sports schools, training centers and sports arena for events. The city will have multiple arenas for each sport. For example, tennis will have 8 moderate sized stadiums. The stadiums will be grouped by four that are connected with each other.

Here is the tennis tournament I thought for the city. The stadiums will be robotic. Each stadium will have three different courts with different surfaces. These courts will be swappable like the stage lifts in a theater. The red court will be clay, green court will be grass and blue court will be hard surface.

The tournament will be invitation only. Top 32 players (men and women separate) will be invited for a three-week competition. In four of the stadiums men’s will play; on the other four, women’s will play. The tournament will start with clay courts on a Tuesday. The matches will be played simultaneously. First round will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday on two sessions (15:00 and 19:00). Second round will be on Thursday. The quarter finals on Friday. Semi finals on Saturday and the final on Sunday.  Then, the Red Tournament will end. Second week on Tuesday the grass tournament will begin. On the third week the hard-court tournament will be held. All the players will be playing on three different surfaces in three weeks.

The competition will have similar format with the Olympics. Men and Women will play best of three sets. The winner of every surface will get a small decorative statue made of colored marble, titanium, 14 carat gold, crystals and colored synthetic gems. These statues will be same for men and women. For red tournament the gem will be ruby; for green, emerald; for blue, sapphire. The loser on the final will get a slightly smaller statue with no colored gems. Semi-finalists will get statues without gold and gem stones. The price money will be determined by the latest value of 10kg of gold. At the end of the tournament, the player who got the most points in all three surfaces will get additional bonus.
